milo

milo, born Rory Ferreira on February 3, 1992, is a Chicago-raised rapper and producer known for dense, philosophically-inflected lyricism drawing on his studies of philosophy at St. Norbert College. He began recording under the name milo after the death of his close friend Robert Espinosa, releasing his first mixtape i wish my brother rob was here in 2011, and has since built a body of work defined by literary allusion, jazz-inflected production and an abstract, introspective style distinct from mainstream rap.

He joined the Hellfyre Club collective in the early 2010s, releasing the mixtape cavalcade and his debut studio album a toothpaste suburb, before departing to found his own label and collective, Ruby Yacht. Under that banner he released a string of acclaimed albums including so the flies don't come, who told you to think??!!?!?!?!, and budding ornithologists are weary of tired analogies, each expanding his signature blend of dense wordplay, self-referential humor and meditations on identity and craft.

Ferreira has also recorded under other names, notably R.A.P. Ferreira, continuing the same restless, genre-blurring approach that made milo a touchstone for underground and alternative hip-hop. His work is often cited for treating rap as a vehicle for philosophical inquiry as much as entertainment, and his catalog remains influential among artists working in experimental and independent rap scenes.
