About the artist
MF DOOM was the stage name of Daniel Dumile (1971–2020), a British-born American rapper and producer celebrated as one of hip-hop's most inventive lyricists. He first emerged in the late 1980s as Zev Love X in the group KMD alongside his brother DJ Subroc. After Subroc's death in 1993 and the shelving of KMD's second album, Dumile withdrew from music for several years before reinventing himself as a masked supervillain character inspired by Marvel's Doctor Doom and the 2000 film Gladiator.
As MF DOOM, he built a singular catalog defined by dense internal rhyme schemes, offbeat cadences, comic-book and pop-culture references, and murky, sample-heavy beats often produced by himself under aliases like Metal Fingers. Key releases include Operation: Doomsday, Mm..Food, and the acclaimed Madvillainy, a collaboration with producer Madlib recorded as Madvillain. He also recorded as Viktor Vaughn and King Geedorah, and paired with producer Danger Mouse for The Mouse and the Mask as Danger Doom.
DOOM's refusal to show his face, performing behind a metal mask, became central to his mythology and influenced a generation of underground and mainstream rappers alike. His wordplay-heavy style and DIY production ethos left a lasting mark on independent hip-hop long before his death in 2020.
