About the artist
MC Hammer, born Stanley Kirk Burrell on March 30, 1962, in Oakland, California, is one of the most recognizable figures in the history of hip hop and popular music. He rose to massive commercial success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, becoming the first hip-hop artist to have an album certified diamond in the United States. His breakthrough record featured the anthem «U Can’t Touch This», built around a sample of Rick James’s «Super Freak», which became inescapable on radio and MTV thanks to Hammer’s athletic dance routines and his signature baggy «Hammer pants».
Beyond the singles, Hammer was a full-scale entertainment phenomenon, fronting elaborate stage shows with large dance troupes and pairing his music with television and merchandising ventures, including an animated series. He followed up his early success with «2 Legit 2 Quit» and continued releasing music through the 1990s, including the pop-leaning «Addams Groove» tied to the Addams Family film franchise, and later material that leaned into a more explicitly Christian direction as he became involved in ministry work.
While critics later accused him of over-commercializing hip hop, Hammer is now widely regarded as a pioneer of pop rap and one of the genre’s first true crossover superstars, paving the way for hip hop’s mainstream dominance in the decades that followed. His influence persists in dance culture, sampling practices, and the broader template of the rapper as an all-around entertainer.
