Madvillain

Madvillain was a hip-hop duo formed by two of underground rap's most revered figures: the masked MC MF DOOM and the California producer Madlib. The pairing came together after Stones Throw Records connected the two, and their chemistry produced Madvillainy (2004), an album built from Madlib's dusty, off-kilter loops and DOOM's dense, wordplay-heavy verses delivered in his signature villain persona. The record is widely regarded as a landmark of abstract, sample-based hip-hop.

Songs like «Accordion», «All Caps», «Meat Grinder» and «Figaro» showcase the duo's approach: short, fragmented tracks that favor mood and lyrical density over conventional song structure. DOOM's oblique rhyme schemes paired with Madlib's crate-digging aesthetic gave the project a cult, almost cinematic quality that influenced a generation of underground rappers and producers.

Despite the acclaim, Madvillain remained largely inactive after Madvillainy, releasing only scattered remixes and compilation tracks. Both members hinted at a follow-up album over the years, but nothing was formally released. MF DOOM's death in October 2020 brought a quiet, definitive end to the collaboration, leaving Madvillainy as their sole but enduring statement.
