Mac Tyer

Mac Tyer is a French rapper from Aubervilliers, in the Seine-Saint-Denis department north of Paris, one of the defining voices of the 93 hardcore rap scene. He first gained recognition as one half of the duo Tandem, alongside Mac Kregor, releasing the well-received Ceux qui le savent mecoutent in 2001 before the pair returned with Kilomaitre Production for a string of mixtapes. Their 2005 album Cest toujours pour ceux qui savent, featuring the track 93 Hardcore, broke them through to a wider audience and cemented Mac Tyers reputation for dense, paradox-laden wordplay.

As a solo artist he built on that foundation with a style built around sharp, deliberate writing and a raw emotional delivery, addressing street life, loyalty, and survival in the banlieue with an intensity that set him apart from more commercial French rap. Tracks like Un jour peut-etre, Ca pue sa mere, and Je suis une legende reflect the mix of bravado and reflection that runs through his catalogue, while collaborations across the French rap scene have kept him a respected fixture in the genre for two decades.

Mac Tyer, also known by nicknames such as Monsieur Socrate and El General, remains associated with the hardcore, street-rooted strand of French rap that emerged from the 93 in the early 2000s, valued as much for his lyrical craft as for his uncompromising persona.
