About the artist
Mac Dre, born Andre Louis Hicks on July 5, 1970 in Oakland, California, was a foundational figure in Bay Area hip-hop, raised in the North Vallejo neighborhood known as The Crest. He began releasing music in the late 1980s through Vallejo producer Khayree’s Strictly Business Records, starting with the Young Black Brotha EP in 1988. His playful, high-energy delivery and slang-heavy style set him apart from the gangsta-rap norms of the era.
In the early 1990s, Dre was convicted in connection with a bank robbery conspiracy and served several years in federal prison, during which he continued to record verses over the phone, some of which appeared on his 1993 album Young Black Brotha. After his release in 1996, he resumed his career with renewed momentum, releasing The Rompalation and reconnecting with Khayree for further collaborations.
Dre became the central figure of the Bay Area’s hyphy movement, popularizing its «thizz» culture and an uptempo, bass-heavy, party-oriented sound that influenced a generation of West Coast rappers. Songs like «Feelin’ Myself», «Thizzelle Dance» and «Get Stupid» remain defining anthems of the era. He founded the Thizz Entertainment label before his death in 2004, and his legacy continues to shape Bay Area rap culture.
