Luniz

Luniz is a hip-hop duo from Oakland, California, made up of rappers Numskull and Yukmouth. The pair rose to national fame in 1995 with their debut album Operation Stackola, anchored by the massive hit «I Got 5 On It», a laid-back, bass-heavy G-funk anthem about pooling money to buy weed that became one of the defining Bay Area rap singles of the decade. The remix, featuring Bay Area heavyweights like E-40, Richie Rich, Dru Down, Shock G and Spice 1, cemented the track as a regional and eventually international crossover hit.

Beyond their signature single, Luniz built a reputation for gritty, street-level storytelling delivered over funky, synth-driven production typical of mid-90s West Coast rap. Their sound blended playful, hook-driven rap with harder-edged tracks about street life, and they were known for their chemistry as a duo, trading verses with a loose, conversational flow. Songs like «Playa Hata» showed their willingness to engage in beef, most notably a highly publicized feud with fellow Oakland legend Too $hort that was later resolved.

Luniz released several more albums, including Lunitik Muzik and Silver & Black, before going on hiatus as Yukmouth pursued a solo career. The duo remain a touchstone of Bay Area hip-hop, remembered above all for giving the genre one of its most enduring party anthems.
