Lunatic

Lunatic was a French hip-hop duo formed in 1994 by Ali and Booba, two rappers from the Pont-de-Sèvres suburb near Paris. Before founding Lunatic, Booba briefly danced with the group La Cliqua, and the pair grew close to Les Sages Poètes de la Rue, eventually becoming part of the wider Time Bomb collective alongside artists like Oxmo Puccino and Pit Baccardi. Their relentless freestyles and mixtape appearances throughout the mid-1990s built their reputation well before an official album arrived.

The duo became one of the defining acts of French rap's golden era, known for dark, cinematic production and unflinching lyrics about street life, drawing comparisons to American hardcore rap while carving out a distinctly French identity. Tracks like «Le crime paie», «HLM 3», and «Civilisé» showcased the contrasting styles of Ali's technical flow and Booba's blunt, imposing delivery, a combination that gave Lunatic its tension and appeal.

Although the duo eventually went their separate ways — Booba going on to a major solo career and Ali continuing with his own projects — Lunatic's influence on French rap's aesthetic and lyrical toughness remained foundational, inspiring a generation of artists who came after them.
