About the artist
Kris Wu (Wu Yifan) is a Chinese-Canadian rapper, singer, actor, and model who first rose to fame as a member of the K-pop group EXO and its sub-unit EXO-M from 2012 to 2014, before departing to pursue a solo career centered on Mandarin-language pop, hip-hop, and R&B. His solo output leaned heavily on cinematic, hip-hop-inflected pop, often tied to film and television soundtracks.
He became a notable crossover figure in the mid-to-late 2010s, releasing the 2017 collaboration «Deserve» with American rapper Travis Scott, which made him the first Chinese artist to top the US iTunes chart. His single «Like That» later became his first to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 73 and marking another first for a Chinese solo artist on that chart.
In August 2021, Wu was detained by Beijing police following rape allegations from multiple accusers, some reportedly underage. He was subsequently convicted, and his music, films, and other work were removed from Chinese platforms in the aftermath. His case remains a significant and controversial chapter in the history of Chinese pop stardom's international ambitions.
