K'naan

K'naan is a Somali-Canadian rapper, singer and poet born in Mogadishu, Somalia, who fled the country's civil war as a child and eventually settled with his family in Toronto, Canada. Coming from a family with a strong literary tradition, he taught himself English partly by studying the lyrics of rappers like Rakim and Nas, and his own music fuses hip-hop with African rhythms, folk influences and spoken-word poetry, reflecting both his Somali heritage and his immigrant experience in North America.

His early albums, including The Dusty Foot Philosopher, established him as a distinctive voice addressing war, displacement and resilience, earning him recognition as one of the most prominent African-born artists in international hip-hop. He reached global mainstream audiences with «Wavin' Flag», a song that became an anthem of hope and unity, especially after a remixed version was adopted as Coca-Cola's promotional song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Another well-known track, «Bang Bang», further showcased his melodic, socially conscious songwriting.

Beyond his own recordings, K'naan has been recognized for lending his voice to causes related to refugees, poverty and global justice, and he later contributed to the song «Immigrants (We Get the Job Done)», reflecting themes of immigration that run throughout his work. His music continues to bridge African storytelling traditions with contemporary hip-hop and pop sensibilities.
