Kevin Abstract

Kevin Abstract, born Clifford Ian Simpson in 1996 in Corpus Christi, Texas, is an American rapper, singer, producer and filmmaker best known as the de facto leader and founding member of the boy band BROCKHAMPTON. Before forming the group, he was an active fixture of online music communities, releasing early self-produced projects and running a music blog, cultivating a DIY, internet-native approach to songwriting and self-presentation from a young age.

As a solo artist, Kevin Abstract built his sound around confessional, often autobiographical lyrics touching on race, sexuality, family and coming of age in a conservative Texas environment, set against production that draws on indie rock, R&B and hip-hop textures. His 2016 album American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story is widely regarded as a defining work, boosted in part by the support of Jesse Rutherford of The Neighbourhood, whom Kevin toured with early in his career.

Beyond his solo catalogue, Kevin Abstract's work with BROCKHAMPTON established him as one of the more distinctive creative voices to emerge from internet-forum music culture, blending vulnerability with genre-blurring production and a strong visual, self-directed identity across music and film.
