Kery James

Kery James, born Alix Mathurin in Guadeloupe in 1977, is one of the most respected figures in French rap, widely regarded as a leading voice of conscious, socially engaged hip-hop in France. He began writing lyrics as a child and co-founded the group Ideal J in his early teens, later becoming associated with the Mafia K'1 Fry collective before establishing a prominent solo career.

His work centers on life in the banlieues, racial and social inequality, discrimination faced by minorities, and questions of religion and identity in contemporary France. Tracks such as «Banlieusards», «Lettre à la république» and «Musique nègre» exemplify his direct, often confrontational approach, combining sharp social commentary with personal reflection and moral seriousness rarely matched among his peers.
