Kenny Rogers

Kenny Rogers was an American singer, songwriter and actor who became one of the defining voices of country-pop crossover music. Born in Houston, Texas, in 1938, he first gained attention in the 1960s with the psychedelic-tinged pop group Kenny Rogers and the First Edition, whose hits included «Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)». He went on to a hugely successful solo career in the 1970s and 1980s, becoming one of the best-selling artists of the era with his distinctive gravelly, warm baritone.

Rogers built his reputation on narrative, story-driven songs that crossed freely between country, pop, R&B and rock, most famously «The Gambler», which also inspired a series of television films. He scored numerous major hits including «Lucille», «Lady», «Coward of the County» and «Islands in the Stream», a chart-topping duet with Dolly Parton that became one of the signature collaborations of the decade.
