Karpe

Karpe (known as Karpe Diem from 2000 to 2017) is a Norwegian hip-hop duo from Oslo formed by Magdi Omar Ytreeide Abdelmaguid and Chirag Rashmikant Patel. The two met in 1998, each already active in music separately, and joined forces in 2000 to start performing together, debuting with the EP «Glasskår» in 2004. Their backgrounds — Magdi of Egyptian and Chirag of Indian descent, both raised in Norway — inform lyrics that mix sharp social commentary, humor, and reflections on identity and immigration with Norwegian pop culture references.

Over two decades Karpe built one of the most acclaimed catalogs in Norwegian popular music, blending rap with pop, R&B, and orchestral or electronic production choices that shift from album to album. They were the first hip-hop act to win the prestigious Spellemannprisen (Norwegian Grammy) «Årets spellemann» in 2010, and have also won «Best Norwegian Act» at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Songs such as «Kunelapelago», «Toyota'n til Magdi», and «Tusen Tegninger» reflect their range from anthemic singles to introspective storytelling.

Their live shows, notably large-scale concerts at Oslo landmarks, and concept albums have made them a defining act in Nordic hip-hop, respected for treating rap as a vehicle for both entertainment and serious cultural critique.
