Jurassic 5

Jurassic 5 is an American alternative hip hop group formed in Los Angeles in 1993, built around the merger of two local crews: rappers Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir (formerly Soup) and Marc 7, alongside turntablists DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist. The group became a flagship act of the West Coast underground hip hop revival of the late 1990s, known for intricate multi-MC interplay, tight group harmonies on the mic, and a sound rooted in old-school boom-bap aesthetics rather than the era's mainstream gangsta rap trends.

Their self-titled debut EP/album «Jurassic 5» (1998) established the group's reputation for lyrical dexterity and turntablism, with tracks like «Concrete Schoolyard» becoming genre touchstones. They followed with «Quality Control» (2000), which expanded their audience further, and «Power in Numbers» (2002), often regarded as a high point of their catalog, featuring guest appearances from artists like Nelly Furtado and Big Daddy Kane.

Their final studio album, «Feedback» (2006), showed a slightly more polished, mainstream-adjacent sound while retaining the group's signature ensemble rapping style. Songs such as «What's Golden» and «A Day at the Races» remain among their best-known work. Jurassic 5 is frequently cited as one of the defining groups of conscious, DJ-centric alternative hip hop, influencing a generation of acts that valued musicianship and lyrical craft over commercial trends.
