JPEGMAFIA, born Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks, is an American rapper and producer known for a confrontational, genre-scrambling style that draws on noise, punk energy, and glitchy electronic production as much as it does hip-hop tradition. Born in New York to Jamaican parents, he spent much of his childhood in Brooklyn and later in rural Alabama before serving in the military, an experience that included time stationed in Japan, where he first began making music under the name Devon Hendryx.
His output is defined by self-produced, heavily distorted beats layered under sharp, often abrasive lyricism that mixes political commentary, internet-culture references, and dark humor. That combination made him a distinctive figure in underground hip-hop, earning acclaim for pushing the genre's sonic boundaries rather than following conventional trap or boom-bap templates.
JPEGMAFIA has built a reputation as one of the more experimental voices to emerge from the SoundCloud-era underground, later collaborating with artists across indie and hip-hop scenes, including a joint project with Danny Brown. His willingness to combine harsh production textures with pop hooks and unpredictable song structures has made him a touchstone for a generation of artists blurring the lines between rap, noise, and electronic music.
