About the artist
Joey Purp, born Joey Davis, is a rapper from Chicago, Illinois, and a key figure in the city's SaveMoney collective, the hip-hop crew founded by Vic Mensa that also includes Chance the Rapper and Towkio, among others. He is also one half of Leather Corduroys, a duo formed with fellow SaveMoney member Kami. Joey attended Whitney Young High School, where he began developing his skills as a rapper, before leaving school in his senior year to work full time.
His early musical influences ranged from Wu-Tang Clan and the Sex Pistols to Lil Wayne, and he has cited Curren$y as a specific inspiration behind his early recordings. Joey Purp released his first mixtape, The Purple Tape, in 2012, establishing his voice within Chicago's rising underground rap scene. He followed it in 2016 with iiiDrops, officially titled Eyedrops, a breakout project featuring contributions from Chance the Rapper, Vic Mensa, and other collaborators.
iiiDrops is widely regarded as Joey Purp's defining statement, showcasing socially conscious lyricism layered over gritty, soulful Chicago production. Tracks such as «GIRLS @», «Photobooth» and «Godbody» reflect his introspective yet street-rooted style, cementing his place within the broader SaveMoney and Chicago hip-hop movement of the 2010s.
