About the artist
Jimmy Wopo was an American rapper from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who emerged as one of the city's most promising young voices in hip-hop before his life was cut short in 2018. He built his reputation through a series of mixtapes and singles that captured the raw, street-level realities of his neighborhood, delivered over bouncy, hard-hitting production.
His breakout track, «Elm Street», named after a street in his native Hill District, became a viral hit and introduced his rapid, melodic flow to a national audience, leading to a follow-up, «Elm Street 2». Other standout songs like «First Day Out», «Devil Face» and «Backdoor» further showcased his ability to combine sharp storytelling with catchy, radio-ready hooks, positioning him as a rising star in the Pittsburgh rap scene alongside collaborators such as Hardo.
His final mixtape, Back Against the Wall, released in 2017, is considered a high point of his short catalogue. Jimmy Wopo was fatally shot in Pittsburgh on June 18, 2018, at the age of 21, cutting short a career that many saw as being on the verge of a major breakthrough. Projects left unreleased at the time of his death, including Jimmy Digital, remain part of his legacy.
