Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit is the American roots-rock band fronted by singer-songwriter Jason Isbell, formed after his departure from Drive-By Truckers. The group takes its name from the 400 Unit, the psychiatric ward at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Its lineup has featured guitarist Sadler Vaden, bassist Jimbo Hart, keyboardist Derry deBorja, drummer Chad Gamble, and fiddler and vocalist Amanda Shires, Isbell's wife.

The band released its self-titled debut in 2009, followed by «Here We Rest» in 2011, both arriving after Isbell's solo debut «Sirens of the Ditch». As Isbell's solo albums «Southeastern» and «Something More Than Free» brought him widespread critical and commercial success, the 400 Unit's profile rose alongside his. Their 2017 album «The Nashville Sound» marked a turning point, debuting at number one on the US Country, Folk, Rock, and Independent charts.

Musically, the band is known for tight, muscular arrangements that support Isbell's narrative songwriting, blending Southern rock, country, and Americana textures. Standout tracks like «If We Were Vampires», «Hope the High Road», and «White Man's World» reflect the group's ability to move between intimate balladry and driving rock, making them one of the most acclaimed acts in contemporary Americana.
