Ideal J

Idéal J is a French rap collective formed in 1990 by Kery James (born Alix Mathurin), then a teenager, along with fellow young rappers including Jessy Money, Rocco, Teddy Corona and Selim, gathered under the banner of the 9-4 (Val-de-Marne) scene. The «Junior» in their name reflected their youth at the time of formation, and the group became one of the foundational acts of French rap during the 1990s.

Idéal J’s music combined hardcore rap aesthetics with socially and politically conscious lyricism, addressing themes of urban life, inequality and struggle in France, a direction that would come to define much of Kery James’s later solo career. Tracks like «Hardcore» and «Le combat continue» became touchstones of the genre’s golden era in France, showcasing dense wordplay and a militant tone.

The group’s work, including songs such as «Show Bizness» and «Pour une poignée de dollars», helped shape the identity of French rap as a vehicle for social commentary, and Idéal J is widely regarded as a formative chapter that preceded Kery James’s prominent solo trajectory.
