Ice-T

Ice-T, born Tracy Lauren Marrow, is one of the founding figures of West Coast gangsta rap. Raised in South Los Angeles after losing both parents at a young age, he took his stage name from novelist Iceberg Slim, whose street-life prose shaped his early lyrical persona. His 1986 single «6 ‘N the Mornin’» is widely regarded as one of the genre’s foundational records, and his 1987 debut album Rhyme Pays became one of the first hip-hop releases to carry an explicit-content warning.

Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s Ice-T built a catalog defined by blunt street narratives and social commentary, with tracks like «New Jack Hustler» and «O.G. Original Gangster» cementing his reputation as a pioneer of the style. He also pushed beyond rap by fronting the heavy metal band Body Count, whose confrontational sound and lyrics — most notably on the song «Cop Killer» — sparked a major national controversy and debate over artistic freedom in the early 1990s.

Beyond music, Ice-T became a prominent actor, most famously as a longtime cast member of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, giving him a rare dual legacy as both a rap trailblazer and a mainstream television presence.
