Hieroglyphics

Hieroglyphics is a hip-hop crew from Oakland, California, formed by a tight-knit group of MCs who came up together in the early 1990s: Del the Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, and the trio Souls of Mischief (Tajai, Opio, Phesto, and A-Plus). The crew's jazzy, sample-driven sound and intricate wordplay became a cornerstone of West Coast underground rap, offering a laid-back, lyrically dense alternative to the era's more mainstream gangsta rap.

Each member built a solo catalog before uniting fully as a group — Del's «I Wish My Brother George Was Here» in 1991 introduced the Hiero sound to a wider audience, Souls of Mischief's «93 ’til Infinity» became a genre classic, and Casual's «Fear Itself» further cemented the crew's reputation. In 1997 they came together to found their own label, Hieroglyphics Imperium, giving them independence from major-label structures at a time when few rap acts controlled their own output.

As a full ensemble, Hieroglyphics released «3rd Eye Vision» in 1998, «Full Circle» in 2003, and «The Kitchen» in 2013, alongside numerous compilations, cementing their status as one of the most respected and enduring collectives in independent hip-hop.
