About the artist
Hank Williams is one of the founding figures of modern country music, a singer-songwriter from Alabama whose short career in the late 1940s and early 1950s reshaped the genre. Performing on radio from his teens and later on the Louisiana Hayride and the Grand Ole Opry, he built a stark, plainspoken style built around simple chord structures, a keening vocal delivery, and lyrics of heartbreak, loneliness, and rural life that felt directly personal rather than performed.
His catalogue, recorded largely for MGM Records, produced some of the most enduring songs in American popular music, including «Your Cheatin’ Heart», «I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry», «Jambalaya (On the Bayou)», «Lovesick Blues», and «Hey, Good Lookin’». Many of these blended honky-tonk instrumentation with blues and gospel phrasing, and his use of a plaintive falsecrack and confessional lyricism influenced generations of songwriters far outside country music.
Williams died in 1953 at just 29, but his influence only grew afterward — he is often called the father of the honky-tonk sound and a direct ancestor of the singer-songwriter tradition. Artists across country, rock, and folk have cited him as a foundational influence, and later performers, including his son Hank Williams Jr., have carried his name and legacy forward.
