GZA

GZA, born Gary Grice, is an American rapper and founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan, widely regarded as one of hip-hop's most respected lyricists. Known within the group as «The Genius», he was the only Clan member to release a solo album, Words From the Genius (1991), before the collective's breakthrough with Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) in 1993, giving him a unique standing as both elder statesman and originator within the group.

His defining work came with the 1995 solo album Liquid Swords, produced almost entirely by RZA, which is widely considered a landmark of 1990s hip-hop and one of the genre's most acclaimed records. The album's dense, chess- and martial-arts-inflected imagery, intricate wordplay and dark, cinematic production established GZA as a master of intellectually dense, technically precise rap, distinct from more flamboyant contemporaries.

Throughout his career, GZA has remained closely tied to the Wu-Tang Clan's broader body of work, contributing to group albums and collaborating extensively with fellow members like RZA, Method Man and Raekwon. His reputation rests on a reputation for lyrical precision and thematic depth rather than commercial crossover, and Liquid Swords in particular continues to be cited as essential listening within hip-hop's canon.
