Guru

Guru, born Keith Elam, was an American rapper best known as one half of the legendary hip-hop duo Gang Starr, alongside producer DJ Premier. His name stood as a backronym for Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal, reflecting the influence of Five Percent Nation philosophy on his lyrical worldview. Raised in Boston and later based in Brooklyn, Guru paired his distinctive monotone, deliberate flow with Premier's boom-bap production to create some of the most respected work in East Coast hip-hop, across six studio albums released between 1989 and 2003.

Beyond Gang Starr, Guru pursued an ambitious solo career, most notably through his Jazzmatazz series, which fused hip-hop with live jazz performance and featured collaborations with jazz and R&B musicians. The project was groundbreaking in bridging hip-hop and jazz traditions, showcasing Guru's range beyond straightforward rap records and cementing his reputation as an artist unafraid to experiment with genre.

Guru's steady, thoughtful delivery and lyrical focus on street philosophy, self-knowledge and social observation made him one of the most respected voices in golden-era and post-golden-era hip-hop. He died in 2010 after a battle with cancer, but his catalog with Gang Starr and his solo work remain foundational listening within the genre.
