Gravediggaz

Gravediggaz were an American hip hop group formed in New York City in 1991, widely regarded as pioneers of the horrorcore subgenre. The group brought together four MCs and producers who had each already made their mark in hip hop: Prince Paul, previously the sole producer for De La Soul and a member of Stetsasonic; Frukwan, also from Stetsasonic; Poetic; and Prince Rakeem, better known as RZA, who would go on to found the Wu-Tang Clan. Each member adopted a death-themed alter ego, reflecting the group's macabre concept.

After struggling for years to secure a record deal, the group released its debut album, «6 Feet Deep», in 1994, an album now considered one of the foundational texts of horrorcore for its blend of dark, cinematic production and morbid, often satirical lyricism. Tracks like «1-800-Suicide» and «Diary of a Madman» showcased the group's mix of gallows humor and unflinching subject matter, delivered over eerie, bass-heavy beats.

The group followed up with «The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel» in 1997, though lineup changes affected the group's later output. Gravediggaz remain influential for opening a lane within hip hop for horror-infused, conceptually dark material, and their sound and imagery have echoed through later generations of underground and horrorcore-adjacent rap.
