Grandmaster Flash

Grandmaster Flash, born Joseph Saddler, is a Barbadian-American DJ widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of hip-hop turntablism. Raised in the Bronx, New York, he began experimenting in the 1970s with techniques like backspinning, punch phrasing, and cutting between breakbeats, laying the technical groundwork for how DJs would manipulate records for decades afterward. He formed Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, one of the first hip-hop groups to gain mainstream recognition.

The group's landmark single «The Message» (1982) broke from party-rap conventions of the era to depict the harsh realities of inner-city life, and «White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)» became another defining record of the genre's early years, tackling drug culture over a stark, driving bassline. These records helped establish hip-hop as a vehicle for social commentary rather than just dance music.

Grandmaster Flash's innovations on the turntable — treating it as a musical instrument in its own right — influenced generations of DJs and producers, and he was among the first hip-hop artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing his role as a pioneer whose techniques remain foundational to DJ culture worldwide.
