About the artist
Gordon Lightfoot (1938–2023) was a Canadian singer-songwriter from Orillia, Ontario, widely regarded as one of the defining figures of North American folk and folk-pop music. He first performed publicly as a boy at Massey Hall in Toronto and went on to build a career spanning more than five decades, becoming a central figure in the Canadian folk revival alongside contemporaries who helped shape the genre's popular sound in the 1960s and 70s.
His music was marked by a distinctive dry baritone voice and skillful use of the twelve-string acoustic guitar, blending narrative songwriting with a warm, unadorned folk sensibility. He was celebrated both for historical and story-driven songs, such as «Canadian Railroad Trilogy» and «The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald», and for deeply personal songs about love and human experience, including «If You Could Read My Mind» and «Early Morning Rain». Other well-known songs, such as «Sundown» and «Carefree Highway», further cemented his reputation as a masterful storyteller.
Lightfoot released more than twenty albums over his career, many achieving gold or platinum status, and was honored as a Companion of the Order of Canada, the country's highest civilian distinction. He was cited as a major influence by artists including Bob Dylan and Robbie Robertson of The Band, and remains one of Canada's most celebrated songwriters. He died on May 1, 2023.
