About the artist
Gillian Welch is an American singer-songwriter whose music, built around close vocal and guitar harmonies with longtime musical partner David Rawlings, draws deeply on old-time, bluegrass and Appalachian folk traditions while remaining distinctly her own. The two met as students at Berklee College of Music in Boston in the early 1990s and began performing traditional-leaning original material together, later relocating to Nashville, where their spare, acoustic sound stood apart from the mainstream country of the time.
Welch's songwriting favors stark imagery, plainspoken narrators and themes of hardship, mortality and rural life, delivered with a stripped-down instrumentation that lets the interplay between her voice and Rawlings' guitar carry the emotional weight. Songs such as «Everything Is Free», «Look at Miss Ohio», «Time (The Revelator)» and «Elvis Presley Blues» exemplify this restrained, deeply lyrical approach, and her music helped shape the alt-country and Americana movements of the 1990s and 2000s.
Her profile grew further through her involvement in the «O Brother, Where Art Thou?» soundtrack, which brought old-time and bluegrass sounds to a much wider audience, cementing her role as one of the key figures in the revival of American roots music. Her enduring partnership with Rawlings, both performing under the «Gillian Welch» name, remains central to her body of work.
