George Jones

George Jones (1931–2013) was an American country singer and songwriter widely regarded as one of the greatest vocalists in country music history, renowned for his emotive phrasing and distinctive, expressive voice. Born in Texas, he rose to prominence in the 1950s and became a defining figure of traditional honky-tonk and country balladry.

His career produced numerous hits including «White Lightning», «The Race Is On», «A Good Year for the Roses» and later «Tennessee Whiskey», but he is most celebrated for «He Stopped Loving Her Today» (1980), often cited as one of the greatest country songs ever recorded and a defining showcase of his vocal artistry. His late-career hit «Choices» further cemented his status as a genre icon.

Jones was known for his turbulent personal life, including struggles with alcohol that earned him the nickname «No Show Jones» for missed performances, as well as his marriage to fellow country star Tammy Wynette, with whom he recorded acclaimed duets. His influence on generations of country artists remains profound, and his phrasing and emotional delivery continue to be studied and revered within the genre.
