Gang Starr

Gang Starr is one of hip-hop's most respected duos, pairing rapper Guru with producer DJ Premier. Guru had gone through earlier lineups of the group in Boston and Atlanta before relocating to Brooklyn, New York, where he connected with DJ Premier (then working under the name Waxmaster C). Together they became emblematic of East Coast hip-hop's boom-bap era, releasing a run of albums from the late 1980s through the early 2000s that balanced jazz-inflected sampling with hard-nosed, lyrically dense rhymes.

Guru's laconic, matter-of-fact delivery contrasted with DJ Premier's meticulous, sample-heavy production, built from chopped jazz and soul loops layered over crisp scratching and drum breaks. Tracks like «Words I Manifest», «Jazz Thing», «Just to Get a Rep», «Mass Appeal», and «Full Clip» became touchstones of 1990s hip-hop, and the duo's «Moment of Truth» album is widely regarded as a genre landmark. DJ Premier's beats for Gang Starr also fed into his parallel career as one of hip-hop's most in-demand producers for other artists.

Gang Starr released six studio albums together before parting ways in the mid-2000s, and their catalog remains a reference point for boom-bap production and conscious, streetwise lyricism. Guru passed away in 2010, and DJ Premier later assembled unreleased vocals into a final Gang Starr album, ensuring the group's legacy continued to be honored within the genre it helped define.
