Freundeskreis

Freundeskreis is a German hip-hop group formed in Stuttgart in the mid-1990s, closely associated with the wider Stuttgart rap scene that also produced acts like Massive Töne. The group is generally placed within the German "conscious rap" tradition, favoring thoughtful, socially engaged lyrics and a warm, jazz- and soul-influenced sound over aggressive battle rap. Their music blends live instrumentation, sampling, and turntablism into a smooth, melodic style that set them apart from harder-edged German rap of the same era.

The group's commercial and artistic breakthrough came with the single «A-N-N-A» from their debut album «Quadratur des Kreises», a track built around an Ivan Lins sample that became one of the defining songs of German hip-hop in the late 1990s. Frontman Max Herre's melodic rap delivery, paired with the group's production, gave Freundeskreis a distinctive identity that helped push German-language rap toward broader mainstream acceptance. Other notable tracks include «Esperanto» and «Leg dein Ohr auf die Schiene der Geschichte», which showcased their politically and socially conscious songwriting.

The group's core lineup centers on vocalist and rapper Max Herre alongside producers and turntablists Philippe Kayser (Don Philippe) and Martin Welzer (DJ Friction). After a period of reduced activity while members pursued solo projects—most notably Max Herre's successful solo career—Freundeskreis reunited for later releases, cementing their legacy as one of the pioneering acts of German conscious hip-hop.
