Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass (c. 1818–1895) was an African American abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman who escaped slavery in Maryland and became one of the most influential voices in the American struggle against slavery. Self-taught in reading and writing despite laws forbidding literacy for enslaved people, he fled north in 1838 and quickly emerged as a powerful public speaker for the abolitionist movement, drawing crowds with firsthand accounts of the brutality of slavery.

His 1845 autobiography, «Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave», became a bestseller and a foundational text of American literature, offering unflinching detail about his life in bondage and his path to freedom. He followed it with two expanded memoirs, «My Bondage and My Freedom» and later «Life and Times of Frederick Douglass», deepening his account and reflecting on the broader fight for civil rights.

Beyond his writing, Douglass published the abolitionist newspaper The North Star, advised Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, and delivered landmark speeches including «What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?», a searing critique of American hypocrisy on freedom. He remained active after emancipation as an advocate for civil rights and women's suffrage, and his writings continue to be studied as essential documents of American history and literature.
