Fonky Family

Fonky Family is a French rap collective formed in Marseille in the mid-1990s, one of the defining acts of the city's raw, street-rooted hip-hop scene. The lineup brought together several distinct voices — Le Rat Luciano, Sat l'Artificier, Don Choa, Menzo, and Fel on the mic, with Pone and DJ Djel handling production and turntables — giving the group a layered, multi-perspective sound rarely matched by other French crews of the era.

Their music is marked by dense, fast-paced verses, gritty storytelling about life in Marseille's neighborhoods, and a production style that mixed heavy boom-bap with cinematic, moody textures.
