Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus is the stage name of Steven Ellison, an American producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles whose music fuses jazz, electronic, hip-hop and psychedelic textures into a singular, boundary-defying sound. A great-nephew of Alice and John Coltrane, he grew up steeped in jazz lineage while absorbing the beat-scene aesthetics of Los Angeles.

He rose to prominence in the mid-2000s through Adult Swim, whose bumpers and interstitials featured his early instrumentals, and soon after connected with Stones Throw Records, the home of J Dilla, whose influence shaped his rhythmic sensibility. Signing to Warp Records, he released a run of acclaimed albums including «Los Angeles», «Cosmogramma», «Until the Quiet Comes» and «You’re Dead!», the latter featuring collaborators like Kendrick Lamar and Herbie Hancock. He also records and performs as a rapper under the alias Captain Murphy.

Beyond music, Ellison is a filmmaker, having directed the feature «Kuso», and runs the label Brainfeeder, which has become a hub for experimental beat music and jazz-adjacent electronic artists.
