Fatlip

Fatlip, born Derrick Stewart, is an American rapper best known as a founding member of the Los Angeles alternative hip-hop group The Pharcyde, formed in the early 1990s. Alongside Slimkid3, Imani, and Bootie Brown, he helped define a playful, off-kilter West Coast sound that stood apart from the era's gangsta rap, built on humor, self-deprecation, and loose, conversational flows.

After parting ways with The Pharcyde in the mid-1990s, Fatlip pursued a solo career marked by candid, sometimes darkly funny lyricism about depression, addiction, and personal struggle, most visibly on the single «What's Up Fatlip?» and its accompanying documentary short, which chronicled his hardships with unusual openness for the genre.

His catalog also includes collaborations and later work such as «Cook» and «Today's Your Day (Wachagonedu?)», reflecting a continued, if lower-profile, presence in underground hip-hop. Fatlip remains respected for his distinctive vocal cadence and for helping push alternative rap toward more personal, unguarded storytelling.
