Everlast

Everlast, born Erik Schrody, is an American rapper and singer-songwriter who first broke through in the late 1980s and early 1990s as part of Ice-T’s Rhyme Syndicate before co-founding House Of Pain with Danny Boy and DJ Lethal. Their anthem «Jump Around» became one of hip-hop’s most enduring party songs and pushed the group’s debut to multiplatinum status, cementing Everlast as a distinctive voice within the Irish-American strand of East Coast rap.

After House Of Pain disbanded, Everlast survived a serious heart attack, an experience that reshaped his artistic direction. He reinvented himself as a solo artist on «Whitey Ford Sings The Blues», fusing rap, acoustic blues, folk and rock in a way that was unusual for a rapper at the time and became commercially and critically successful, spawning the hit «What It’s Like». The album’s raw, socially conscious storytelling and stripped-down instrumentation set him apart from his hip-hop peers.

Over the following decades Everlast continued moving fluidly between hip-hop, blues, country and rock, collaborating notably with Carlos Santana and later joining the hip-hop supergroup La Coka Nostra. He has periodically reunited with House Of Pain for live shows, remaining a respected figure who bridged rap and Americana long before genre-blending became commonplace.
