eLZhi

eLZhi, born Jason Powers, is a rapper from Detroit, Michigan, first known as a member of the storied crew Slum Village, which he joined after the departure of founding member Baatin. Within the group he helped carry forward the legacy established by J Dilla and T3, contributing to albums that kept Detroit’s soulful, jazz-inflected boom-bap sound alive through the 2000s. He eventually stepped away to build a solo catalog defined by technical precision.

As a solo artist eLZhi built a reputation as one of underground hip-hop’s most technically gifted MCs, prized for dense multisyllabic rhyme schemes, internal rhyme, alliteration, and vivid, literary imagery. His profile grew significantly with the 2011 album Elmatic, a song-for-song reinterpretation of Nas’s classic Illmatic, produced with Will Sessoms, which showcased his ability to reinterpret canonical material while asserting his own voice.

Beyond his solo work, eLZhi has pursued collaborative projects, including forming the duo Jericho Jackson with producer Khrysis. Throughout his career he has remained closely associated with Detroit’s hip-hop lineage while carving out a distinct identity built on lyrical craftsmanship rather than commercial crossover.
