About the artist
El Quinto Escalón was the most influential Spanish-language street freestyle battle event, held in the Caballito neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, starting on July 16, 2012. It grew out of Argentina's underground rap battle scene and became the launching pad for a generation of Argentine MCs who went on to become mainstream recording artists.
Rather than releasing studio albums, the collective's catalog consists of recordings of live freestyle duels — «Octavos de Final», «Cuartos de Final», «Semifinal», and «Final» rounds in which rappers improvised bars against each other in front of a street crowd. Names like Duki, Trueno, Klan, Lit Killah, and Replik built their reputations here before becoming some of the most prominent figures in Latin trap and urban music. The event's YouTube channel, run by organizers known as Alejo and Muphasa, amassed roughly one million subscribers and over 211 million views at its peak.
El Quinto Escalón's popularity surged through 2015 and 2016, both within Argentina and across the broader Spanish-speaking freestyle community internationally, before ending on November 11, 2017, following disagreements between its creators and representatives — closing out one of the defining chapters in the history of Latin American freestyle rap.
