Earl Sweatshirt

Earl Sweatshirt, born Thebe Neruda Kgositsile in 1994 in Los Angeles, is a rapper and producer who emerged as one of the most talented members of the Odd Future collective. His self-released 2010 mixtape Earl showcased dense, technically intricate wordplay that made him a cult favorite before he had even turned sixteen, though its dark content also drew controversy and coincided with his temporary absence from public life while he was sent to a therapeutic school abroad.

Upon returning to Los Angeles, Earl distanced himself somewhat from Odd Future's shock-rap aesthetic, developing a more introspective, lyrically dense style. His 2013 debut studio album Doris, featuring production from Frank Ocean, RZA, The Neptunes and Tyler, the Creator, showed a more mature and personal songwriter. He pushed further inward with I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside (2015), a raw, claustrophobic record dealing with depression and grief, largely produced by Earl himself under his alias randomblackdude.

His later work, including Some Rap Songs (2018) and Feet of Clay (2019), embraced abstract, sample-based production and impressionistic songwriting, cementing his reputation as one of underground rap's most respected and influential voices. Known for a monotone, rhythmically dense flow and unflinching honesty about mental health, family and grief, Earl has become a defining figure in alternative hip-hop of the 2010s and beyond.
