Dwight Yoakam

Dwight Yoakam is an American country singer-songwriter born in 1956 in Pikeville, Kentucky, who emerged in the mid-1980s as a leading figure of the neotraditionalist movement, rejecting the pop-polished Nashville sound of the era. After finding no audience in Nashville, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he built his following on the same club circuit as punk and roots-rock acts, blending honky-tonk with the twangy, guitar-driven Bakersfield sound pioneered by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard.

His breakthrough album «Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.» established his sharp, hiccuping vocal delivery and hard-edged traditionalist sound, and he followed it with a long run of hits including «Ain't That Lonely Yet», «Fast As You», and «Streets of Bakersfield», the latter a celebrated duet with Buck Owens himself that helped revive Owens's career.

Over several decades Yoakam has released around twenty studio albums, charted more than thirty singles, and earned multiple gold and platinum certifications, while also maintaining a parallel career as a film actor. He remains one of the most influential figures in reviving traditional honky-tonk and Bakersfield-style country for a rock-attuned audience.
