About the artist
Dr. Octagon is a fictional persona created by rapper Kool Keith in collaboration with producer Dan the Automator and turntablist DJ Q-Bert, presenting a bizarre, gruesome and surreal alter ego of a time-traveling alien gynecologist and surgeon from the year 3000. The character debuted on the 1996 album «Dr. Octagonecologyst», a landmark of underground hip-hop known for its dark, abstract production and Kool Keith's stream-of-consciousness, horror-movie-inflected lyricism.
The project stood apart from mainstream rap of its era through its cinematic, eerie soundscapes built by Dan the Automator and scratched textures from DJ Q-Bert, paired with Kool Keith's absurdist, graphic and often shocking wordplay on tracks like «Blue Flowers» and «3000». It became a touchstone for alternative and experimental hip-hop, influencing later generations of left-field rap production.
Due to legal and creative-control disputes, unauthorized Dr. Octagon material was released without the involvement of the original trio, prompting Kool Keith to symbolically kill off the character through his separate Dr. Dooom persona. Decades later, the original collaborators reunited to revisit the character on new material, cementing Dr. Octagon's status as one of hip-hop's most distinctive conceptual projects.
