Don Williams

Don Williams was an American country singer and songwriter known as the Gentle Giant of Country Music for his warm baritone and understated, unhurried delivery. He got his start in the 1960s folk trio the Pozo-Seco Singers before launching a hugely successful solo career in the early 1970s that made him one of the defining voices of countrypolitan and soft country through the following two decades.

His sound favored simple arrangements, acoustic guitar, and a relaxed vocal warmth over honky-tonk twang, which helped him cross over to pop and adult contemporary audiences in the US and, notably, in the UK and Ireland, where he remained enormously popular. Signature songs like «I Believe In You», «You're My Best Friend», «Tulsa Time», and «Amanda» showcase his knack for plainspoken, emotionally direct lyrics.

He worked closely with songwriters such as Bob McDill, whose material — including «Good Ole Boys Like Me» — suited his reflective style perfectly. Williams was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and remained a touring and recording presence for decades, influencing later generations of country artists who favored restraint over bombast.
