About the artist
DMX, born Earl Simmons (1970–2021), was an American rapper from Yonkers, New York, who became one of hip-hop's most intense and emotionally raw voices in the late 1990s. His stage name referenced the Oberheim DMX drum machine he used as a teenage beatmaker. He broke through in 1998 with the album It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, followed the same year by Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, and in 1999 by …And Then There Was X, an unprecedented run of hit records for a rapper.
His music combined gravelly, aggressive delivery with deeply personal and often spiritual themes, frequently addressing struggle, faith, and inner turmoil alongside street narratives. Signature tracks like «Ruff Ryders' Anthem», «Party Up (Up in Here)», «Where the Hood At?», and «X Gon' Give It to Ya» became hip-hop staples known for their anthemic energy. He was a founding member of the Ruff Ryders collective.
Beyond music, DMX built a film career with roles in Belly, Romeo Must Die, and Exit Wounds, and hosted the BET reality series Soul of a Man. He spoke publicly about his long struggle with addiction, which shaped much of his songwriting. His death in 2021 was widely mourned across the hip-hop community.
