DJ Quik

DJ Quik, born David Blake, is a West Coast rapper, producer, and DJ from Compton, California, widely regarded as one of the foremost architects of G-funk. His sound draws on the funk of George Clinton and Roger Troutman, filtered through smooth basslines, live instrumentation, and meticulous mixing that set a standard for West Coast production. He came up through the local Compton scene with «The Red Tape» and was affiliated with the Penthouse Players Clique before releasing his platinum-selling debut album «Quik Is the Name» in 1991, home to his biggest hit, «Tonite».

Throughout the 1990s, Quik built a reputation both as a solo artist and as a sought-after producer, working with major names including Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, and JAY-Z, and mixing or remixing tracks for artists like Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson. His long-running rivalry with MC Eiht of Compton's Most Wanted produced one of West Coast rap's most notable diss tracks, «Dollaz + Sense», before the two later reconciled.

As his career matured, Quik shifted from gangsta-rap themes toward more musically ambitious work, releasing several solo albums alongside collaborative projects like The Fixxers with AMG, BlaqKout with Kurupt, and Rosecrans with Problem. His influence on G-funk production and West Coast hip-hop's sound remains foundational.
