About the artist
DJ Paul, born Paul Duane Beauregard, is a rapper, producer and DJ from Memphis, Tennessee, best known as a founding member of Three 6 Mafia. Alongside Juicy J and Lord Infamous, he helped pioneer the dark, horror-inflected strain of Southern hip hop that came out of Memphis in the early 1990s, built on eerie synths, chopped horror-film samples and menacing bass. Tracks like «Damn I'm Crazed», «187 Invitation» and «Grab Da Gauge» capture that early underground sound, released through the group's own label before Three 6 Mafia broke into the mainstream.
DJ Paul's role was as much behind the boards as on the mic — his production style, drenched in reverb and slowed-down samples, became a direct ancestor of what is now called "phonk," a subgenre that resurfaced online decades later built almost entirely on the Memphis rap sound he helped create in the 90s. He and Juicy J shared an Academy Award for Best Original Song for «It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp» from the film Hustle & Flow, a rare crossover of underground rap into Hollywood recognition.
After tensions within Three 6 Mafia, DJ Paul continued recording and producing, including with the group's later incarnation Da Mafia 6ix, while also branching into reality television. His catalog remains a touchstone for the current phonk and horrorcore revival.
