DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince were a hip-hop duo formed in West Philadelphia in the 1980s, pairing rapper Will Smith with turntablist Jeff Townes. Both were building reputations independently in the city's local hip-hop scene before joining forces, and together they became one of the most commercially successful and family-friendly acts in early rap history, known for playful storytelling and clean, radio-ready delivery at a time when rap was still fighting for mainstream acceptance.

The duo made history in 1989 by winning the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance with «Parents Just Don't Understand», a breakthrough that helped legitimize hip-hop within the wider music industry. Their biggest commercial hit came with «Summertime», which reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned them a second Grammy, becoming a genre-defining ode to warm-weather nostalgia. Other well-known tracks include «Boom! Shake the Room», «Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble», and «A Nightmare on My Street».

Smith's rising acting career, including the theme song «Yo Home to Bel-Air» for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, eventually shifted his focus toward Hollywood and a solo music career. Despite this, Smith and Townes have remained close friends and maintained that the duo never formally broke up, continuing to collaborate over the years under Smith's solo credit.
