DJ DMD

DJ DMD was a rapper, producer and DJ from Port Arthur, Texas, whose work sits at the foundation of the Houston hip-hop sound built around chopped-and-screwed rhythms and slow, drawling deliveries. He grew up alongside Pimp C, attending the same high school, and became a mentor figure who helped Pimp C find his footing before UGK's formation with Bun B — a formative link that ties DMD directly into one of Southern rap's most influential lineages.

He is best known for «25 Lighters», released in 1998 shortly after Fat Pat's death and featuring both Fat Pat and Lil Keke — a track that became DMD's signature song and one of the most beloved records to come out of Houston, capturing the city's slowed-down, syrup-and-candy-paint atmosphere. His broader catalogue, including «So Real», «Mr. 25/8», «Shinin’» and «The Trill Connection», shows his ties to the DJ Screw-era circle of Houston artists and his role as both performer and producer within that scene.

In the mid-2000s DMD stepped away from secular hip-hop after finding Christian faith, later revisiting his most famous record as «25 Bibles», a gospel-rap reworking featuring Bizzle and Jarrod Phillips. He continued working within Christian hip-hop, including a co-sign of PyRexx's Workflo Mixtape project. His legacy remains anchored in his early collaborations with Fat Pat, Lil Keke and Pimp C, and in «25 Lighters» as a cornerstone of Houston rap history.
