Die Antwoord

Die Antwoord is a South African rap-rave group formed in Cape Town in 2008, built around the rapper Ninja, vocalist and rapper Yolandi Vi$$er, and producer DJ Hi-Tek. The trio built their identity around zef, a South African subculture that reclaims markers of lower-class Afrikaner taste as a badge of pride, and they turned this aesthetic into a full audiovisual project spanning music, film, and photography rather than just songs.

The group broke through internationally with the 2009 viral video for «Enter The Ninja», whose deliberately provocative visuals and delivery made audiences unsure whether the act was satire or sincere. Ninja has insisted the persona is inseparable from him, comparing it to Superman and Clark Kent being the same person. This ambiguity, which the group has called documentary fiction, became central to their appeal.

Musically Die Antwoord fuses rap with rave, electro, and pop elements, often rapping in a mix of English and Afrikaans slang over aggressive electronic production. Tracks like «I Fink U Freeky», «Fatty Boom Boom», and «Baby’s on Fire» extended their reputation for confrontational, high-energy performance and striking visual branding, cementing them as one of the more distinctive acts to emerge from South Africa’s alternative music scene.
