De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig

De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig are a Dutch hip-hop group from Amsterdam that broke through nationally in 2005 with the single «Watskeburt?!», a track that reshaped the sound of Dutch-language rap and brought street slang into mainstream pop culture. The group is built around rapper-vocalists Willie Wartaal and Faberyayo alongside Vieze Fredje, with production largely handled by Bas Bron, known for his distinctive electronic, synth-driven beats.

Where much earlier Dutch hip-hop leaned on straightforward boasting and American templates, De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig built a style around absurdist, often nonsensical wordplay, dark humor and playful vulgarity, delivered over glitchy, dance-inflected electronic production rather than conventional boom-bap. This combination made them stand out both lyrically and sonically within the Dutch scene, and songs such as «Sterrenstof», «Manon» and «De Formule» extended their run of hits well beyond their debut single.

Far from being a one-hit act, the group is widely regarded in the Netherlands as one of the most influential and enduring Dutch hip-hop acts, credited with popularizing Dutch-language rap on a mass scale and shaping a generation of artists that followed them.
